Psychological Assessment

Our psychological assessments provide a comprehensive understanding of your child’s cognitive, emotional, and social profile

Gain insight into your child’s strengths and challenges to support their growth and development

Our psychological assessment team is comprised of clinical psychologists and neuropsychologists registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario.

All aspects of our assessments are completed by the psychologist allowing them an opportunity to build rapport, observe and interact with your child, adapt testing as needed, and gain valuable insight into your child’s social, emotional, and learning profile.

  • • Comprehensive psycho-educational assessment

    • Neuropsychology assessment

    • Gifted assessment

    • Consultation

    • Attendance at school meetings and consultation with teachers

    * We do not offer developmental or Autism assessments at this time.

Comprehensive Psycho-Educational Assessment

  • When your child or adolescent is experiencing learning, attention and/or social-emotional difficulties.

  • • A comprehensive understanding of your child’s learning, emotional and social profile helping you, your child and their school gain insight into their areas of strength and need

    • An understanding of the underlying causes of learning, emotional and social challenges

    • If your child meets criteria, a diagnosis for certain conditions (e.g., ADHD, giftedness, learning disability, intellectual developmental disorder (IDD), depression and anxiety disorders)

    • Essential information to inform treatment plans and target intervention

    • Tailored recommendations to support your child at home and school

  • Step 1. Parent Intake Session

A clinical interview with parents to learn about presenting concerns and relevant family and developmental history. Parents will be asked to complete questionnaires focused on the child or adolescent’s cognitive skills, socio-emotional functioning, and behaviour.

    Step 2. Assessment Sessions

Assessments sessions are completed over the course of one or more days of testing. The psychologist administers standardized tests of cognition (e.g., attention, memory). We want the assessment experience to be a positive one for the child/adolescent and will take short breaks or break for the day as needed.

Step 3. Report and Feedback Sessions

Once the assessment is complete, tests are scored, integrated into a coherent and meaningful profile, and summarized in a report. The report includes recommendations individualized to the child’s strengths and needs.

Results and recommendations are also discussed verbally with the parents and their child in a feedback session.

Neuropsychological Assessment

  • While a psycho-educational assessment helps to understand a child or adolescent’s learning profile, a neuropsychological assessment helps to determine why the child or adolescent may be experiencing learning difficulties.

A neuropsychological assessment includes all aspects of a psycho-educational assessment, as well as additional testing in areas that may underlie learning problems such as attention, memory, executive functioning (e.g., problem-solving, planning, mental flexibility), language, and visual processing.

This assessment provides a more comprehensive understanding of your child’s strengths and weaknesses, stemming from an understanding of brain process and function, allowing for more focused and specific recommendations and/or interventions for school, vocational planning, and everyday life.

  • A neuropsychological assessment is recommended when your child has:

    • Sustained a brain injury or has a medical condition that may impact their thinking skills (e.g., premature birth, NF1/2, genetic disorders, epilepsy, exposure to chemicals/alcohol/drugs/lead prior to birth, etc.)

    • Had learning difficulties since early development (i.e., preschool)

    • A complex profile, and it is unclear whether their learning difficulties reflect cognitive problems, mood (e.g., depression, anxiety), and/or other factors

    • An education plan that is not working and a more comprehensive understanding of their strengths and weaknesses is needed

Gifted Assessment

  • The goal of a Gifted assessment is to determine whether your child meets the criteria for identification as a gifted student.

  • 1. Administration and scoring of standardized tests of intellectual functioning (2 hours)

The psychologist will administer a battery of tests to examine your child’s intellectual functioning (i.e.WISC-V), including their verbal skills, visual-spatial skills, reasoning skills, working memory, and processing speed.

    2. Verbal feedback of assessment results

After the testing is complete, the psychologist will score the tests and share the results with you verbally. This may occur immediately after the testing session or on another day.

    3. Written Report

In addition to verbal feedback, the psychologist will also summarize the test results in a brief written report, including whether your child meets criteria for giftedness.

Consultative Services

  • If you are unsure if your child would benefit from an assessment or which assessment is right for your child, the psychologist can help you to make an informed decision.

  • Once parents and/or their child have had the time to process and consolidate the assessment findings, they often find it helpful to engage in a follow-up session with the psychologist to ask further questions and gain additional clarification.
