What is anxiety?

Anxiety is defined by feelings of worry, nervousness, or physical unease. Some anxiety is normal, expected, developmentally appropriate, and contributes to optimal performance. However, when anxiety becomes excessive and debilitating, an anxiety disorder may develop.

Anxiety disorders are characterized by high levels of distress, impairment and dysfunction in daily living. Often, people with anxiety struggle with intolerance of uncertainty, engage in avoidance behaviour and seek excessive amounts of reassurance from family and friends.

Supporting anxiety with warmth, compassion, and evidence-based treatments

When anxiety is impacting a child or adolescent’s ability to engage in their daily life, our psychologists, social workers, and occupational therapists can provide support. We treat anxiety with evidence-based treatments, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and exposure response-prevention (ERP).

At Red Oak, we teach skills and strategies to promote mental health hygiene, including mindfulness activities, grounding exercises and self-compassion.
